Westonka Students Celebrate a Successful FIRST LEGO League Season
Westonka Middle School FIRST LEGO team in competition

The Westonka Middle School FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge team competed in the regional competition December 6 at Holy Family Catholic High School.

Westonka students concluded an exciting and rewarding FIRST® LEGO® League season in December.

Westonka’s FIRST® LEGO® League Explore team celebrated their season with the Explore Festival at Shirley Hills Primary School on December 16. FIRST® LEGO® League Explore is a hands-on STEM program for students in grades 2-4 that introduces engineering, coding and problem-solving through collaborative, project-based learning.

At the Explore Festival, teams showcased their LEGO® models and “Show Me” posters, sharing what they learned throughout the season. Students met with parent reviewers and explained their design process, teamwork and discoveries. The festival celebrated curiosity, creativity and confidence as students proudly shared their work.

Earlier in the month, Westonka Middle School students on the FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge team competed with their robot in the FLL Regional Competition. During one unforgettable match, the Westonka team completed all but one of their programmed missions. With 20 seconds remaining, the robot repeatedly missed the final task. Undeterred, the team relaunched the robot with just six seconds left—and completed the mission at the literal last second. The dramatic finish earned a high score of 250 points and secured third place in their division.

FIRST® LEGO® League is run each fall through Westonka Community Education & Services. For more information, contact Enrichment Coordinator Carley Olsem at olsemc@westonka.k12.mn.us.
