Westonka Public Schools’ Human-Centered Approach to Using AI
Westonka Public Schools is taking a thoughtful, phased approach to exploring how artificial intelligence (AI) can support student learning, operational efficiency and innovation across the district. As AI technologies become increasingly present in classrooms and operations, we recognize both the tremendous opportunities they offer and our responsibility to ensure their use is safe, secure, and aligned with our commitment to high academic expectations and healthy relationships.
At this time, Westonka has not officially rolled out AI tools for student use. During the 2025-26 school year, our primary focus has been on staff learning, planning, and the development of guidelines and procedures when using AI tools. Any future student use of AI to support learning will be introduced carefully, with clear expectations, staff supervision, and communication with families.
What Is Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to computer systems that can analyze information, generate text, images, or recommendations, and assist with complex tasks. Examples your child may encounter include AI writing assistants, language translation tools, personalized learning platforms, and educational tutoring programs.
AI is a tool — not a teacher or a decision-maker. Westonka Public Schools will work to ensure that all AI use keeps students, teachers, and administrators in charge of every important decision. We call this the Human-AI-Human (H-AI-H) framework.
The H-AI-H Framework: Every AI interaction in Westonka Public Schools will follow three steps: (1) A human - teacher, administrator, or student - defines the question or task. (2) AI provides information, ideas, or support. (3) A human reviews the AI output, applies their own judgment, and takes responsibility for the final decision. AI is never the last word.
Westonka’s Phased Approach to AI
Westonka is taking a phased, intentional approach to AI that balances innovation with safety, security, and instructional alignment. As with other significant adoptions, this work will be research-based and methodical, directly supporting our collective efforts on behalf of our students.
In partnership with Quantum Bridge Solutions (QBS), the district is establishing a comprehensive school board AI policy and AI procedural manual to support Westonka staff and students in the use of AI technologies. Our approach will be adaptive and responsive to the ever-changing AI landscape.
In February 2026, the district introduced AI guidelines for staff that provide practical direction for responsible AI use across various roles. Guidance and tools for student use of AI will be introduced thoughtfully during the 2026-27 school year along with targeted AI staff training in the fall.
Throughout the 2025-26 school year, Westonka staff have participated in professional development focused on:
- Ethical and responsible AI use
- Student data privacy
- Instructional best practices
- Appropriate use of emerging technologies
Additional role-specific training will continue during the 2026-27 school year.
What AI Use May Look Like in the Future
Beginning in the 2026-27 school year, students may gradually begin interacting with approved AI-supported tools in carefully supervised ways. Potential uses could include:
- Classroom Learning: Teachers may use AI tools to personalize instruction, provide additional practice, or support students with different learning needs.
- Student Projects: Older students may use approved AI tools to support research and learning, always with clear teacher guidance and with transparency about how AI was used.
- Administrative Operations: Staff may use AI to support communication, planning, and data analysis in ways that improve efficiency and service to families.
- Safety & Supervision: All AI tools used in Westonka schools are reviewed and approved by the district AI Committee before any student or staff use.
Our Commitments to Families
Privacy First
We will never share your child’s personal information with AI vendors. Student data is protected under FERPA, COPPA, and Minnesota law.
Only Approved Tools
AI tools will be reviewed for student privacy, data security, and educational appropriateness before any student or staff use
Age-Appropriate Access
AI tools are matched to student grade level. Younger students may have highly supervised, teacher-guided AI interactions. Older students may have broader access with accountability expectations.
Academic Integrity
AI may never be used to complete a student’s work for them. Students are expected to understand and be able to explain everything they submit.
Equity & Accessibility
All AI tools must meet accessibility standards and be available to all students regardless of background, ability, or language.
Transparency
Families will be informed as new AI tools are introduced for student use, and the district will continue to communicate openly about how AI is being used to support learning.
We understand families may have questions about AI and its role in education. Westonka Public Schools is committed to ongoing communication and transparency as we continue learning and planning in this area. If you have questions, please contact your building principal or Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Mark Femrite at femritem@westonka.k12.mn.us.
