Students Celebrate Earth Day with Variety of Activities

Westonka Middle School students enjoyed lessons in their outdoor classroom on Earth Day.
Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Many students in the Westonka primary schools spent extra time outside exploring nature on a summerlike day.
Shirley Hills first graders spent time outdoors learning about Earth Day, making cute Earth creatures, and planting seeds. Students did Earth Day art projects and participated in an outdoor Earth Day Scavenger Hunt on the school grounds.
Hilltop kindergartners in Carey Carlson’s class read the story “The Earth Gives More” and brainstormed ways they can give back to their Earth. They wrote about their ideas and illustrated their writing. Students went on an outdoor nature walk, discovering living and non-living things and enjoyed visiting their class maple tree, “Thunderbolt,” to see al the changes she is making during springtime. Students ended the day eating a classic “dirt” dessert, complete with gummy worms on top.
Westonka Middle School students enjoyed the day as well, doing lessons in the school’s outdoor classroom.
